I simply can't contain my infatuation with food, so I've spent much of my career writing about it. Here is a running sample of my work, peppered, of course, with a hearty helping of food porn (from myself and others).

Must-Have: Oikos 2% Greek Yogurt in Key Lime

Shit, that’s fresh! I haven’t always liked Oikos Greek yogurt but this flavor is KILLER! None of that grittiness you find in certain Greek yogurts (*cough* PC *cough*), not too sweet, delightfully tart and oh so thick. Picturing a killer berry parfait…

Wanna buy five copies for my mother…

…on the cover of the Weekend Post. My doughnuts feature was the cover story this weekend, very exciting stuff! Besides drooling over the decadent flavours you’ve probably never dreamed of, see how shops across Canada are showing love to their communities.

Delicious, delicious love.

Adorable! Though I would make them with beef. Still, the beets give a lovely colour!

My ABCs

Donair City

So, this was just brought to my attention, via my friend Gil, via her boyfriend TJ, who happens to be quoted in my recent donair article which I realize I forgot to post. Hopgood’s Foodliner, a new Roncey resto, is serving up mini versions (two to an order) of the East Coast, gyro-esque favorite and they’re KILLER! Not sure how the above Bonte version (available in Vaughan - that’s all I know) would stack up. Here’s my pic of the Hopgood’s version:

Things I’ve Loved

I’ve loved a few things lately. I loved and lost these mini mangos, lost because I was dumb enough not to buy them. You can see their size compared to large apples - they’re bloody adorable! I guess I have a second life regret now. Hopefully it’s easily rectifiable…

Another fruit item over which I hesitated - freakishly massive blueberries (I think they were Driscoll’s). Since blueberries as of late have been tart and altogether lackluster, I figured these would be even more so. But oh was I wrong. They’re practically grape size and sweet sweet sweet. Mutant antioxidant heaven.

Here’s something I was certain I would love, but I’m not so sure it’s worth the trek. Din Tai Fung in Markham is one of the forerunners in the dim sum races, and in some parts with good reason. Their juicy pork dumplings blew my mind. I’m so used to the mostly dried up juicies I find downtown, but these offer a mouthful of rich, meaty broth (greasy, of course). The texture of the sticky rice dumplings was cool, too. The green onion pancake rocked and the spicy wontons were OUT OF CONTROL. Other than that, meh. And five of us ordered a quantity worthy of a small extended family. So, yah…

Then we have the new Judd Appatow/HBO show Girls, created by the HILARIOUS Lena Dunham. This shit is my new obsession. Lena so perfectly encapsulates the apathy and entitlement of our generation. It’s quirky and cute and poignant and so so funny (despite some issues that are fostering backlash - i.e. VERY #privelegedwhitegirlproblems, which is perhaps why I love it so). I wonder what my parents would think of it. They might be as disgusted as Hannah’s parents when she comes to their hotel room late at night on opium pod tea and asks them to give her $1100/month for the next two years until she finishes her memoirs. Must-see TV.

And finally, Jack White’s Blunderbuss, which you can stream at this VERY MOMENT! It’s mentally amazing. Jack White is, by far, one of the most talented, original and charismatic musicians, nay, visionaries of our time. He blows my mind at every turn. I put him in a category in the most sacred musical recesses of my mind, with Arcade Fire. It’s got that typical Jack White bluesy, soulful feel with a lot of range. Some songs are tender, some rock hard, and then there’s everything in between. I’m shaking with excitement for the show we’re going to in Detroit. I also can’t wait to hear the re-imagined White Stripes tunes he’ll be playing. If you haven’t read this perplexing New York Times profile, check it out - it’s stupid how absurdly cool he is. And listen to the album here. And watch the Sixteen Saltines video.

A little eye candy from the now-closed M. Wells diner in Long Island City (marrow and escargot, to be exact). I never made it there, but no matter because… hazaa! They’re opening a new location at the MOMA PS1. I will run there the second my feet next hit Manhattan terra.

Must-Have: Ozery’s Crispy Pitas

Image courtesy of Dinnick & Howells.

I’ve only had the Rosemary Garlic flavour, which I’m devouring as I type, but they’re probably the best pita chips I’ve ever had. I don’t like when the chips are too thick - they can scrape the roof of your mouth and throw the pita chip-dip ratio way off. These are super thin and super crispy with a whole lot of rosemary flavour (the garlic isn’t as present - all the better to eat at work!). They aren’t in stores yet, or maybe they’re just hitting shelves now. Just had a garlicky one, yum!

Must-Have: Harbord Room’s Epic Burger

Image courtesy of My Life Is Food (she had the EXACT same meal as us, plus a pork tenderloin for me)

I’m late on this one, but I think it’s usurped the Drake’s longstanding position as best gourmet burger in the meaty files of my mind. The Harbord Room serves it on a slab of wood, with a pretty lil’ salad (see that watermelon radish hiding? I found it in the epic Japanese Tacos too!) and thyme-laced fries wrapped in a folded menu. The sauces are homemade ketchup and lemon aioli and they are perfect. Egg bun, medium-rare patty, sharp cheddar, caramelized onions, tomato, aioli. Heaven.
